We visited the Bridestowe Lavender Farm when we did our east coast trip in October, and were impressed by the sheer size of the operation, so nothing would satisfy us but that we should return when it was in full bloom, the best "window of opportunity" for which is between mid-December and mid-January, varying slightly depending on how the weather has been in a particular season.

We went down Wed 20 Dec, returning Sat 23 Dec, and this time used the direct Jetstar Sydney - Launceston service, which wasn't nearly as awful as anticipated, and a darned sight quicker and cheaper than going QF via Melbourne.

We stayed at Kurrajong House B&B in Launceston, where Andre and Linda proved excellent hosts, with Andre's breakfast eggs a speciality.

Bridestowe in full bloom is really a magnificent sight, rows of purple stretching out almost as far as the eye could see, accentuated by the contrast with the orange/red soil. Although busy with tourists (we avoided the café), many of them don't venture far from their coach, and there is plenty of space for those who do, so it wasn't too hard to get pictures without them, and the dominant sounds were the birds above and the bees making the most of their opportunity.If you look closely, you may pick out a bee in one of my shots.

Management had strategically positioned two women near the car park, hand-picking the lavender (see the first image). I'm sure hand-picking is not the norm! But they rubbed the bunches of picked lavender together to give off the most powerful aroma.



Postscript

Four visits to Tassie in quick succession, with some serious thought that we might relocate down there.  Now that we've come to something of a pause, I'd like to mention a company which helped make all four visits smooth and enjoyable, and that is HERTZ, or technically AutoRent-Hertz, which since March 1984 has been the Sublicensee in Tasmania for worldwide Hertz Rent-A-Car.

Not only were we the beneficiaries of the friendship and generosity of Julie Logie, a director of the company, who  indulged my interest in the commercial aspects of the business (not to mention restaurant recommendations, etc), but even at the "coal face" the service we received from the staff was outstanding.

For example, on collecting a vehicle and being unable to work out the controls, one of their staff didn't just give me instructions but came out to the car park to give me a demonstration and make sure I was OK.  

On another occasion, this time dropping off a vehicle at Hobart airport, some distance from the terminal building, when it came time to go through security prior to boarding I discovered that I had left my wallet (credit cards, phone, etc) in the car.  The Hertz desk in the terminal rang the drop-off people who confirmed that they had located my wallet, but rather than make me go back to retrieve it, one of their staff rushed it over to me.  Not many companies would do that.  Contents intact, needless to say.

And of course we never had a moment's problem with any of the vehicles we were allocated.
